On 25th July 2018, the students of Diploma in Accountancy (AC110) had a class with Dr. Mohd. Azmi bin Nias Ahmad for UED102. Few things were shared by him during the class. There are 3 topics that Dr. had taught us, the topics are as followed : 1. Getting Ready to Learn 2. Goal Setting 3. Time Management As for the topic Getting Ready to Learn, we had been exposed of how a school student differ from college student : 1. University students spend less time in class. 2. University students spend more time outside of class. 3. University students need to read a lot. 4. University students have fewer tests. 5. University students might not be reminded of due dates and exams. 6. University students have fewer daily assignments. 7. University students have a bigger class. 8. University students live and study at the same place. 9. Instructors don't tell university students exactly what's on the tests. 10. University students have more team / group assignments with meetings outside of class. 11. University does not requires attendance. 12. University students don't have extension on due date. 13. Participation in university affects grades. 14. University students have fewer reasons for excused absences. 15. University students are responsible for their own learning and behaviour. 16. University students have a certain instructor for a few months. 17. Instructors don't tell university students exactly what notes to take. 18. University students can drop a class. 19. Instructors may not be trained in education in university. 20. University students may have an international instructor teaching them. 21. University students may not have lecture and readings overlap 100%. Next is the characteristics of successful students. Succesful students are actively involved in their learning---they are active learner. Successful students view learning in a systematic way---they are strategic learners. In addition, successful students are more likely to plan, monitor and evaluate their learning---they are self-regulated learners. Finally, successful students take responsibility for their own learning---they are independent learners. 1. BECOME AN ACTIVE LEARNER - Active learners talk and listen, write, read and reflect on what they are learning. - We can also learn by reading actively. - Reflecting on the information. 2. BECOME A STRATEGIC LEARNER Strategic learners are students who view studying as a systematic process that is to a good degree, under their control. SKILL Strategic learners possess a wide variety of skills to aid their learning. Some of the skills include knowledge about yourself as a learner, knowledge about different types of academic tasks, knowledge about strategies for learning, prior content knowledge an knowledge about the contexts in which that knowledge could be useful. WILL A strategic learner must have the will to put that knowledge into practice. Will involves setting goals, selecting appropriate study strategies and believing in your own ability and in the study strategies that you have chosen. Furthermore, strategic learners are motivated---they are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. SELF-REGULATION Finally, a strategic learners are self-regulated learners. They manage their time well, monitor their learning, evaluate the results of their effort and approach learning in a systematic way. Self-regulated learners are actively involved in their own learning; they set goals, develop plans for achieving those goals, monitor their progress an evaluate their results. 3. BECOME A SELF-REGULATED LEARNER Self-regulated learners plan before starting a task, select strategies that they know are appropriate for the task, monitor their learning as they are completing the task and aster the task is completed, they evaluate the results of their effort. Self- regulated learners know what they have to do to be successful. 4. BECOME AN INDEPENDENT LEARNER Self-regulated learners are self-directed rather than other directed. They are what we call independent learners---they take initiative for their own learning. After that, Dr. Mohd. Azmi bin Nias Ahmad also exposed us with types of learning styles that would help us to enhance our performances. The term learning style refers to the preferred way that you acquire, process and retain information--- the way you learn best. There are mainly 3 types of learning styles which are as follows : We were asked to answer a few questions to evaluate our learning styles and after checking the results of the questions we answered, I finally get to know that I am a visual learner. So, what are the difference of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners? VISUAL LEARNERS Visual learner learn best by seeing things. Reading, looking at pictures, diagrams and charts, watching films, videos and demonstrations are all ways that you can learn new information. A visual learner understand their professor's lecture better if they read the text chapter ahead of time. Note-taking strategies such as outlining, mapping an charting work well for visual learners. Strategies for visual learners :
Auditory learner learn best by hearing information. They prefer to go to their class and listen to the lecture before they read the text chapter. Reading difficult text passages out loud is also a good idea for auditory learner. Discussing the course material, mumbling information as they read and study, asking and answering questions out loud and listening to study notes on tape are some strategies that they may already use if their preferred learning style is auditory. Strategies for auditory learners :
Kinesthetic learner learn best by doing things. They prefer hands-on tasks that allow them to touch and feel. Many of the strategies used by auditory and visual learners also appeal to kinesthetic learners. Kinesthetic learners also learn well from doing experiments, taking self-tests or replicating the tasks they will later have to perform in the testing situation. The kinesthetic learners also learn well from making up the flash cards as well as from the action of self-testing. Strategies for kinesthetic learners :
As for the topic Goal setting, we have been taught to set goals for the new semester :
WHAT ARE GOALS?
Goals are the ends towards which we direct our effort. In other words, goals are things we want to achieve.
The goals we set must have some important characteristics :
1. Goals should be self-chosen.
2. Goals should be moderately challenging.
3. Goals should be realistic.
4. Goals should be measurable.
5. Goals should be specific.
6. Goals should be finite.
7. Goals should be positive.
HOW TO WRITE EFFECTIVE GOAL STATEMENTS?
1. Write down what you want to accomplish.
2. Write down any obstacles.
3. Write down any resources available to you.
4. Review and revise your tentative goal statement.
5. Polish your goal statement.
Here are some templates of goal statements :
After we are done writing our goal statements, we learned about Learning Management System. So, the photo below shows a complete learning maagement system :
The last thing we learned from Dr. Mohd. Azmi Nias Ahmad was about Time Management.
The first thing we learned was about the definition of time. So, the definition are as follows :
Noun : the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present and future.
Verb : plan, schedule or arrange when (something) should happen or be done.
Next, we were taught of the definition of time management. So, the definition of time management is the ability to use one's time effectively or productively, especially at work.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME :
1. Time is invaluable.
Time is more valuable compared than money. Time is precious partly for the reason that we are all only allotted a certain amount of time in our lives, and so we need to make sure that we use it wisely. Nothing can stop the flow of time. Time once past cannot be brought back by any means.
2. Punctuality.
Every people have to walk in any mode of the life with the punctuality. It is vital for the better life. If we are punctual at every movement of the life, then no one can say anything wrong for us.
3. Value the time during emergencies situations.
The weather condition always remain uncertain. There remains the risk of natural calamities. To tackle the situation of natural disasters, the government and other organizations are coming up with "Disaster Management and Recovery Plans." During the times of emergency, the disaster recovery teams are expected to act fast without wasting a single minute.
4. Courtesy
Being on time and being aware of what time it is ensures that we will not turn up late for our appointments, It is vital if we want to treat other people with politeness and respect. Their time is valuable, just like ours are and we should not cause them to waste their time just like that.
HOW TO ORGANIZE STUDY TIME?
HOW TO OPTIMIZE STUDY TIME?
WHAT IS PROCRASTINATION?
There are many reason of why someone procrastinate such as :
But, everything has its own solution, just like procrastinate, which are :
