UED102 : Study Skills (8/8/2018)

Hello there!

So, as for this week, we had our last UED class with Mr. Zahid bin Laton earlier this morning before we head back to our house for a good 3 weeks of holiday. As for this last session, Mr.  Zahid had taught us about Lecture Notes and Plagiarism.

I'm gonna start with lecture notes first. Well, as a student, it is a must to take notes whenever we are in classes.

Therefore, WHY DO STUDENTS NEED TO TAKE LECTURE NOTES?
  • Promote active learning method
  • Provides an accurate record of information
  • Provides an opportunity to interpret, condense and organize information
  • Provides an opportunity for repetition of the material
Next, HOW DO STUDENTS TAKE LECTURE NOTES?
  1. READ THE TEXT ASSIGNMENTS BEFORE CLASS STARTS.

Reading text assignment before class is really important because it allows us to build up some background of the topic. Besides, reading text assignments beforehand will also make students have some ideas of what the upcoming lecture was about, so they can get ready physically and mentally. Next, students who read text assignments before class starts will also get to identify the main ideas of the lecture and this will also enable them to organize their notes easier. Lastly, students who read before their class starts are often familiar with the key terms and names related to the topic they are about to learn. This way, the students will understand the lecture better.

2. GET READY TO TAKE NOTES IN CLASS.

Sitting in front row in our classroom allow us to see and hear the lecture better. Whilr waiting for our lecturer to begin the lecture, review the notes that we had took during last class meeting.

3. BECOME AN ACTIVE LISTENER.

There are a lot of strategies to improve our listening skills. So below are the list of strategies I provided that may be useful for us all while taking lecture notes :
  • Read the text assignment before the lecture to build background on the topic
  • Review your last set of notes before the lecture begins
  • Sit in the lecturer's line of vision
  • Decide what you want to listen
  • Focus your attention by sitting and making eye contact with the speaker
  • Focus your attention mentally by eliminating or avoiding directions
  • Listen with an open mind, setting aside your own biased
  • Control your emotional responses
  • Listen for the main points and related details and take notes.
  • Ask and answer questions.
  • Monitor your listening.
  • Check with lecturer or a classmate if you are unsure of some information.
Next, En. Zahid also introduced us to an effective note-taking system which is The Cornell Note Taking System. Below is the layout of this note-taking system :

The last topic that we learned for UED102 was regarding Plagiarisms.

DEFINITION OF PLAGIARISM is an act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author's work as one's own, as by not crediting the original author.

There are many things that we did that can be considered as plagiarisms, which are :
  • Turning in someone else's work as your own
  • Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credits
  • Fail to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • Giving incorrect information about the source
  • Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • Copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of our work, wether we give the author credits or no
"It's better to prevent than to cure". This sayings here can also be applied to plagiarism. Therefore, HOW DO STUDENTS PREVENT PLAGIARISM?

1. Students need to consult our instructor / lecturer.

This is very useful for students. When they consult their lecturer before they start doing their assignments, they will have a clear view of what they need to do for their assignment. Thus, plagiarisms will not occur when they know what they need to do.

2. Students need to plan their own paper beforehand.

When a student plan what he/she wanted to do beforehand, they will always have a way in mind to do their job perfectly without copying others.

3. Take effective notes.

If we wants to prevent ourselves from doing plagiarisms, taking effective notes is the solution. This is because the notes that we took can be used as our material to do the work, so we don't need to search it up online or whatsoever and ending up copying others' works as known as doing plagiarisms.

4. Cite sources.

A student who take even a little information from someone else's works have to put citation to show gratitudes and prevent people from thinking that the whole idea of the work are originally from us when it is clearly aren't.

5. Make it clear who said what :

If we only take a sayings / quotes / anything that is verbally said by a person, we should quoted it by inserting "......" at the beginning and ending of the sentences. But do not forget to still put their name there to give people a better idea of who said that sentences we put in our assignments.

6. Know how to paraphrase :

Even if we are so desperate that we have no other choices rather than to copy others' works, there is still a way that we can use to not get involved in any scandal regarding plagiarism,  which is to paraphrase everything. Paraphrase is the act of expressing something written or said using different words and styles . Therefore, here is an example of how paraphrase is done :

Next, we also learn how to calculate Grade Point Average (GPA). So, WHAT IS GRADE POINT AVERAGE?

- The final examination results and assessments at the end of every semester are designed a Grade Point Average (GPA) which represent a student's academic achievement.

- A GPA refers to the calculated average of the letter grades a student earns in each semester following a 0-4.00 scale.

So,  HOW TO CALCULATE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)?

- Multiply each numeric grade value by the number of credits the course was worth.

These are the numeric grades :

- Add these numbers together.

- Divide by the total number of credit hours.

I guess that's all from me,  thank you .
